LEE CARTER, Choral Conductor
Lee Carter is a choral director, musician, and educator whose passion for music and teaching others to love music are found in all facets of his career.
Artistic director of Nepean Choir since 2018, Lee is also in his 10th season as artistic director for Castenchel Choir based in Chelsea, QC. In addition to being Regional Coordinator for the Capital Regional Music Fest Vocal Music Festival, Mr. Carter continues as a full-time performing arts teacher at Nepean High School in Ottawa. Lee was nominated for Best Secondary Teacher of the Year and Best Music/Drama Coach of the Year for the 2023 Ottawa Awards. Previously the artistic director for the European Union Christmas Concert presented annually by the E.U. at Notre-Dame Basilica in Ottawa, he has conducted workshops for CAMMAC Ottawa-Gatineau and choirs in the National Capital Region.
His commitment to collaborative music-making sees him working with diverse musicians locally, nationally and internationally. Lee’s choirs have worked with the likes of the National Youth Orchestra of the Netherlands, Daniel Taylor and the Theatre of Early Music, and the NAC Orchestra, as well as artists like Kenny Rogers, Frank Mills, Craig Cardiff, and most recently, TALK. They have sung with groups like the London Trio Plus, the Graz Boys Choir, and the Canadian Chamber Choir. Lee loves bringing new choral music to light and has commissioned new works from Elise Letourneau, Beverly McKiver, and Shannon Linton while his choirs have premiered several new works including those by Karen Donaldson-Shepherd, Stephen Eisenhauer, and Tim Piper.
Lee holds Bachelor’s Degrees of Music and Education from the University of Ottawa where he studied tuba performance with Nick Atkinson and voice with Sandra Graham.
